Jonge kerkuilen

Vrijdagavond 14 juli was ik aanwezig bij het ringen van jonge kerkuilen. Onze buren hebben een uilenkast in de schuur en ik wilde graag eens zien hoe de uilen geringd werden, daarom vroeg ik of ik mocht komen kijken. 

Zo rond april, mei, was de ringer er voor de eerste keer geweest om te kijken naar de nestkast. Toen was er helaas nog niets te zien, de kerkuilen zaten in de kast. Nu, zo’n acht weken later, kwam hij weer de nestkast controleren. De ringer ging de zolder op naar de nestkast en zei dat deze helaas leeg was, jammer. 


Maar toen kwam hij opeens aanlopen met twee kerkuilskuikens, hij vond ze bij het uilenbord. Ze zaten al bijna helemaal in het volwassen verenkleed. Eén voor één werden de kuikens gewogen, geringd en werd aan de hand van de tekening op de veer van de vleugel het geslacht bepaald. Deze kuikens waren beide mannetjes.
